Twenty-four writers and artists from around the globe were honored Sunday night at the 27th Annual L. Ron Hubbard Achievement Awards at the famed Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, in the very room the first Academy Awards was held.

The annual event celebrated the winners in the L. Ron Hubbard Writers and Illustrators of the Future Contests (http://www.writersofthefuture.com) before a packed hall and thousands more who were logged on to watch the event as it streamed live. The night's keynote speaker was Dr. Pete Worden, Director of the NASA Ames Research Center, who spoke of the relationship between science fiction as the inspiration that leads to science fact. He closed by saying, "I said at the beginning that science fiction writing has helped inspire NASA. I also like to think that what we do at NASA has helped inspire you—that our new discoveries provide the tools to open your imagination."

Each writing and illustrating contest winner was presented their trophy by contest judges at the ceremony and combined cash prizes and royalties of over $30,000. The Gold Award to the author of the Story of the Year was presented by Dr. Worden and K.D. Wentworth, Editor for Writers of the Future, to Richard Johnson of Melbourne, Australia, for his story "In Apprehension, How Like a God." The Gold Award for the Illustrator of the Year was presented to Irvin Rodriguez, of Bronx, New York, by Keir Graff, senior editor for Booklist Magazine of the American Library Association, and Ron Lindahn, a multiple award winning artist and Illustrator of the Future Contest coordinating judge.

Prior to the awards ceremony, the winners were flown in from as far away as Australia and South Africa to attend a week long workshop taught by contest judges —including New York Times bestselling author Kevin J. Anderson (Dune series), World Fantasy Award winner Tim Powers ("On Stranger Tides," adapted as the 4th Pirates of the Caribbean film), multiple Hugo and Nebula award winner Robert J. Sawyer (The WWW Trilogy), Hugo and Nebula award winning author Larry Niven (the Ringworld series), and internationally acclaimed artists, Dave Dorman (Star Wars and Batman artist), Stephen Hickman (over 350 book and magazine covers), Robert Castillo (S.P.I.C. The Storyboard of my Life), and Cliff Nielsen (cover artist for Chronicles of Narnia), the cover artist for this year's anthology—each one an experienced professional in the field providing sound advice based on hard-won experience.

The Writers of the Future writing contest (http://www.writersofthefuture.com) was initiated by L. Ron Hubbard in 1983 to provide a means for aspiring writers to get that much-needed break. Due to the success of the Writing Contest, the companion Illustrators of the Future Contest was created in 1988. This year marks the Centennial anniversary (1911-2011) for Mr. Hubbard who was hailed by Publishers Weekly as "one of the greatest literary figures of the 20th century."

The intensive mentoring process has proven very successful. Past winners of the Writing Contest have published over 700 novels, 3,000 short stories and winners of the Illustrating Contest have had their art published in more than 500 books and magazines, with 4,500 illustrations, 350 comics and over 1.3 million art prints.

Galaxy Press:
In 2008, they announced they would be releasing eighty volumes containing the works Hubbard wrote for pulp magazines, at the rate of four titles every four or five months. The release is scheduled to be accompanied by a $1.9 million dollar marketing campaign, including commercials on such programs popular with middle school children as Transformers and SpongeBob SquarePants. John Goodwin, the president of Galaxy Press, stated that the sale and marketing of the books is not intended to recruit people into the Church of Scientology. The profits from the books will go toward marketing future fiction books and to Applied Scholastics, a nonprofit organization that promotes Hubbard's ideas regarding education.[1]

If Galaxy Press says this isn't to recruit people into Scientology, then why are they promoting Hubbard's ideas on education?

I was educated by L. Ron Hubbard personally and it left me way behind in main stream education.

Tony Ortega did a writeup today on this "writers of the future".

http://blogs.villagevoice.com/runninscared/2012/03/scientologys_wr.php

I personally am appalled that these people, and I am talking celebrity writers here are "Thanking" L. Ron Hubbard. Are YOU serious? Do you know how much the word 'celebrity' infuriates me?

I can think of a few celebrities that should have celebrity status and do not, but the world out there is more concerned in whom is shagging whom and who has contributed more to supposed charity and what footballer wears what and how can we promote this dress designer and what crap are we going to watch on the TV next? What  advert can we use to make this sell? Well, people love sex, so lets make food sexy and cars sexy and what sells? SEX? And, what kind of world do we really live in?

Which brings me back to Scientology, L. Ron Hubbard claims that Scientology creates a "world without war, crime or insanity, where honest beings can have rights, and where Man is free to rise to greater heights."

Well, I would write about the soldiers in Afghanistan, American soldiers, but right now my computer cannot handle that, oh, surprise surprise, suicide rates are phenomenal.

No, I think we have a link...
http://warnewsupdates.blogspot.com/

So, I am looking for worldwide Crime and I know there is a lot of this, but, google is directing me to .......who knows where, there is so much of it, google does not know where to send me.....

So, let's look at insanity?

The Insanity Test! Sounds pretty much like Scientology to me:
http://penddraig.co.uk/pen/tests/sanity.htm

I Love Google! ROTFL!

And what does Ex Scientologists tell you? GOOGLE IS YOUR FRIEND! ROTFFL!

So, let's look at the suicides, what, you stopped laughing, so did I! There was NEVER anything to laugh about. Let's look at them and scrutinize them!

Some of the comments are great, I especially liked this one.

Skippress wrote:
Oh God, where do I start? Authors Services started as a literary agency - they were going to handle $cientologist writers at the time who were doing well. Then all the TV and cartoon writers - Jeff Scott (real name Maurer), Michael Maurer (Jeff's brother, grandsons of Moe Howard of the Three Stooges),  Rick Merwin (who had been in the Sea Org and run Estates for Hubbard, married to Nikki Merwin, Mary Sue's best friend and secretary), and Paul Haggis basically said no thank you.
Authors Trevor Meldal-Johnsen and Dan Sherman and Tony Cohan weren't particularly interested either (although Trevor later died writing bio lies about Hubbard and Sherman still writes them as far as I can tell and has gone completely to hell).
So that pantload Norman Starkey and wild-eyed wacko Fred Harris decided to start this contest and a TV show, which Fred didn't have a clue how to do so I told him. That piece of crap ran for a while and they did it in conjunction with this contest. Fred confided to me once that he believed all the movers and shakedowners in the Sea Org were former disciples of Jesus and that Hubbard was Jesus reincarnated, that's how nuts he was. But then there had been a sci-fi project just like that moving around Celebrity Centre in the mid-1970s...
I digress. For years, staff members were told to never mention Elwrong's sci-fi days. Now suddenly it was rayguns blazing, what the hell?
The hell was Lon Tinney, production manager for "Star Wars" (miniature and optical effects unit) who told everyone at CC it was going to be a big hit. (At the time, Hollywood didn't care much for sci-fi, which is why Lucas initially got turned down.) So when that boomed, Elwrong suddenly started thunking he could cash in on the rubes and use his Sea Org slaves to pull it off, and there he went. He tried to cash in his entire carrot-on-a-stick "religion" by putting the story of OT3 "The Wall of Fire" into his crap sci-fi script "Revolt in the Stars" (most of which was probably written by his Commodore's Messengers including Janice Gillham, daughter of Yvonne Jentzsch of Celebrity Centre). He got the $cientology-staffed "A Brilliant Film Company" (financed by Becky, Bobby, and Cooper Rounds, rich kid heirs of the Coleman lantern fortune from Wichita, Kansas) to try to make the movie. Had it gone into production he would have received $666,000 ("The Beast" number from Revelations, haha).
Thankfully, that turd in a volcano never erupted and it wasn't until John Revolting made Razzie favorite "Battlefield Earth" that the public was splattered with Elwrong's sci-fi "genius."
As a member of SFWA in the late 70s, I wouldn't go near Writers of the Future in any capacity even though I was still in $cientology. But writers are whores, often enough, and every person you see on that list of judges could be working the Bunny Ranch tomorrow, as far as I'm concerned. If you dive in a sewer willingly, there's no way to come out without shit all over you.
Thanks for airing this stinky mess, Tony.
